At RDC everyone involved in the creation of your perfect drum is a master in his or her field. Our construction process is extremely precise, utilizing advanced machinery, techniques and strict quality control at every stage. Why Stave Construction
Fibers aligned vertically provide a straighter path for vibrational energy throughout the shell. That continuity preserves the wood’s acoustic properties better than stacked, cross‑grained plywood.
A 5‑ply 7"×14" shell uses 99% more glue than the same-size stave shell. To put it another way, a plywood shell uses 1,000 times more glue. Fewer glue surfaces and more consistent wood-to-wood contact reduce internal damping, increasing sustain and projection and helping to express the natural tones of the wood.
All of our bearing edges are first milled flat on our custom-made CNC equipment and then finished by hand. This allows the flattest possible surface for consistent contact between head and shell, yielding clearer attack and faster transient response.
RDC Finish
We utilize a range of finishes, from satin to deep, high-gloss mirror polish, and every level takes serious time and care to execute properly. Our satin finishes are built up in multiple thin coats, with careful sanding between each layer to keep the surface smooth while preserving a more natural look. Our gloss finishes go even further: additional coats, progressively finer sanding grits, and multiple stages of buffing and polishing to bring out a true, glassy depth that makes the grain look three‑dimensional. A mirror-polish gloss is the most demanding of all because any tiny scratch, pore, or sanding mark has to be eliminated, which means hours of leveling, curing, re-sanding, and both machine and hand polishing. From sealing and grain‑filling, to color work, clear coats, leveling, and final polish, every finish involves many passes, and a lot of hands‑on inspection to make sure the shell not only looks incredible, but is durable enough to handle years of playing.
