On the other hand if you're seeking a brighter more focused sound there are a large variety of denser hardwoods to choose from, especially in stave construction. Woods like Ebony, Bubinga, Purple Heart or Rosewood can provide a clearer more defined sound that projects well and cuts through the mix. Often times this is better for live situations or when the music calls for higher snare drum tunings, but that doesn't mean they don't perform well in low tuning ranges as well. This is where the dimensions and style of the drum shell come into play along with head choice and hardware.
